The staff have high standards of customer service and the owners have added plenty of modern facilities to make your South Dakota stay comfortable. The site has a a catch-and-release fishing pond (no licence required), and a creek running through the property where fishing is permitted (licence required here). It's all surrounded by hills and prairies to wander in for evening strolls or finding your own private getaway to camp.

Elk Creek Resort also has a seasonal outdoor pool, a games room, a horseshoe pit and access to a number of hiking trails. The resort is home to the Petrified Forest of the Black Hills museum, where visitors can find out more about the petrified forest of the Black Hills, one of the largest outcroppings of fossilised petrified wood in the area.

The modern bathrooms on site have free hot showers.

The campground is an excellent base to enjoy the outdoors, with direct access to a number of hiking trails and fishing as well as horse riding.

In the area, visit the Crazy Horse Memorial, the world's largest mountain carving, a memorial for all Native American tribes and with several museums.

Also see the Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns, a limestone cave complex nine miles south of Rapid City, on the way to Mount Rushmore and by the Wind Cave National Park. Mount Rushmore, the site of four gigantic carved sculptures depicting the faces of US presidents, is also a popular local stop.

On the road to Mount Rushmore are the Reptile Gardens, home to the world's largest reptile collection. The Bear Country seasonal drive-through wildlife park with wolves, bears, elk and other North American animals is also a short drive from Rapid City.
